Aujourd'hui, j'ai envie de vous parler d'un grand duo comique, le plus grand surement : Laurel et Hardy
Car, même si la mode est un peu passée en ce moment de regarder leurs films, il restent incontestablement parmi les meilleurs.




STAN LAUREL
16 juin 1895 - 23 février 1965


Il est né Arthur Stanley Jefferson à Ulverston (Lancashire) en Angleterre. Tout jeune, Stanley rêvait déjà de monter sur les planches et de faire carrière comme comique de music-hall. Il fit ses études à l'école secondaire King James de Bishop Auckland et dès l'âge de seize ans, il débuta sur la scène du Pickard's Museum, un petit théatre de Glasgow. Ensuite, il joua pendant 2 ou 3 ans pour la célèbre troupe de Fred Karno puis partit aux Etats-Unis en 1910. Il se produisit dans les théâtres de vaudeville américains où il n'eut aucun mal à trouver des rôles de comiques.

En 1917, un producteur le remarque et lui propose de tourner dans un film. Ce fut "Nuts in May". Il devint célèbre mais le vedettariat ne viendra que dix ans plus tard, lors de son association avec Oliver Hardy.

Sur le tard, il reçut un Oscar à titre honoraire. Vers la fin de sa vie, il créa un groupe "les compagnons de la Nouba" d'après un titre de ses films de 1934, avec Jack Mc Cabe, auteur de "Mr Laurel et Mr Hardy". Ces clubs avaient pour vocation d'assurer la conservation des films du célèbre tandem. Stan Laurel rédigea lui-même les statuts sur un mode humoristique, tournant en dérision le texte trop sérieux et conventionnel de fondation du club. Ce club eut des antennes dans de nombreuses villes, chacune portant le nom d'un des films de Laurel et Hardy.

Ses dernières années furent assombries par plusieurs maladies et des ennuis cardiaques mais Stan vécut une vieillesse heureuse et ne se départit jamais de son humour.


OLIVER HARDY
18 janvier 1892 - 7 août 1957


Hardy s'appelait de son vrai nom Olivier Norvelle Hardy et est né à Harlem en Géorgie, de parents d'origine anglaise et écossaise.

Dans sa famille, on chantait beaucoup, Hardy prit des leçons de chant et fut engagé à l'âge de huit ans dans un spectacle musical mais il ne continua pas sur cette lancée. Il essaya les études de droit mais abandonna vite.

En 1913, il ouvrit une petite salle de cinéma. Très vite, il se passionna pour le cinéma et décida de jouer les comiques. La même année, il entra dans la compagnie Lubin qui tournait en Floride. Son premier film, "The Paperhanger's Helper" date de 1915 et constitue une sorte de prototype des futurs films de Laurel et Hardy.

Comme Laurel, Hardy eut une vieillesse paisible et heureuse. Bien qu'il fut accablé par la maladie, il garda son sens de l'humour et son appétit de vivre.

AVANT LEUR DUO

Laurel et Hardy ne travaillèrent vraiment ensemble qu'à partir de 1926, à l'exception d'un film "Lucky dog" tourné en 1917 et avaient chacun une carrière déjà longue dans le cinéma muet.

Leurs rôles et leurs personnages "solitaires" furent bien différents de ce qu'ils furent en duo.

Laurel, plus mince que Hardy, était plus apte à jouer les rôles de soupirants. Egalement scénariste et metteur en scène, il connaissait bien la technique de la comédie et savait, mieux que Hardy, composer son propre personnage.

A l'origine, Stan Laurel est rarement un benêt. Il est malin et rusé et ne perd pas de temps à se lamenter. Il est assez cynique. Travailleur, il n'hésite pas à exploiter ses camarades de travail et à filouter s'il l'estime nécessaire.

Au début des années 30, il tourna une série de films, qu'il imagina pour la plupart lui-même, distribués par la Metro. Ce sont des satires, des parodies, succès commerciaux à l'époque.

Laurel, en désaccord par la suite avec Louis B. Mayer, cette compagnie renonça ensuite à produire des courts métrages. Stan rejoignit alors Hal Roach, ce qui allait contribuer à consolider sa réputation de comique populaire et l'amener vers sa future collaboration avec Hardy.

Entre 1923 et 1926, Laurel tourna de nombreux courts métrages dans les studios d'Hal Roach dans lesquels ses rôles ne varient guère : il est agressif, bagarreur, plein d'idées, peu sympathique mais incontestablement drôle.

Hardy avait débuté 2 ans plus tôt dans le cinéma et était utilisé comme "pendant" d'acteurs tels que Billy West et Larry Semon dans des films comiques en tant que "dur", truand rigolo ou "gros" ridicule à l'élégance surannée. En dépit de sa corpulence, Hardy était extraordinairement leste et se prêtait à l'exigence de ses rôles en recourant rarement à des doublures.

Chez Hal Roach, Hardy avait des rôles secondaires très nettement inférieurs à ceux qu'il avait en travaillant aux côtés de Billy West ou Larry Semon. Son personnage de "dur" commençait à s'estomper. Il interprétait cependant des rôles qui lui permettaient de jouer sans maquillage, d'exercer ses dons de comique et de perfectionner son jeu.

Il introduisit un certain nombre de mimiques : le clin d'oeil au public, la colère rentrée, le sourire de l'enfant pris en faute qui exprime la perplexité, les pieds qui s'emmêlent, les mains qui se tordent, les mouvements des bras.

Les premiers films où jouèrent ensemble Laurel et Hardy sont plus le fait d'une collaboration que d'une équipe. Hal Roach mis longtemps avant de découvrir les énormes possibilités résultant de leur coopération mais il leur permit ensuite de développer leur style personnel qui donna le duo comique le plus populaire de tous les temps.
